Bat Event  16th April 2014

The Bat Event began in the Portglenone Community Centre.  Karen Healy from the N.I. Bat Group told us many interesting facts about bats.  She had brought information leaflets, stickers and a very welcome cup of tea or coffee.

PortglenoneBatTalk_1As the sun was setting we made our way up to Portglenone Forest where she demonstrated the use of the bad detectors.  We had enough detectors for nearly every group or family to share.  Luckily the rain stayed away and we took a stroll through the forest – it was early and the bats hadn’t wakened up.  When we got back to the pond area we heard the first tweak on the detectors.  Then more and more rattles and tweaks were heard.  There was enough light in the sky to just see the bats as they skimmed along just over our heads.  As more and more bats wakened we got more excited.

Fifteen bat detectors were rattling and bleeping and the kids and adults calling ‘there’s one there’.  It’s amazing to think that all this activity goes on every night.  The bats were awake and patrolling the paths between the trees searching for midges and moths to eat.

So next time you are in the forest, consider the bats as they sleep during the day!
